Taking a road trip is not the fastest way to your destination but the journey is half the fun. You get a chance to see parts of the country you wouldn’t normally see and you’ll get to know your traveling companions (sometimes too well).
Preparation is the key to having an enjoyable and hassle-free holiday trip on the road. Don’t wait until the last minute to get prepared; if possible, start planning a week before you leave.
About a week before you leave get your car serviced. Have the belts and hoses checked and if necessary changed, have your brakes checked, and have the oil changed. Your mechanic can make a quick inspection to let you know if there are any concerns with your vehicle. Car travel is no fun when you’re stuck on the side of the road so take care of any repairs before setting out.
Before leaving buy maps of your trip and figure out your route. Don’t wait until you’re driving in the car to figure this out; it will only get you lost and create frustration. You should also look for alternate routes in case there is road construction or traffic. Figure out how long it will take you and where you will be spending your nights. The internet is a great resource for this and you can also research places to sleep and eat.
Check the weather for your route and make sure you have the necessary equipment. Snow chains are something that many traveling by car forget. If you wait until you’re required to use them it is not only a huge hassle but you’ll be forced to pay high prices. If you’ll be using snow chains then be familiar with how to use them; don’t wait until you’re stuck on the side of the road in freezing weather.
Be prepared for flat tires. Make sure you have a spare and all the equipment for changing flat tires. If you don’t know how to change a tire then learn before you take your road trip.
Make sure you have a first aid kit that is fully stocked. Bring any necessary medication such as pain reliever, motion sickness pills, and indigestion pills.
Now that you have taken care of all the necessities it’s time to think about comfort along the way. Clean your car right before you leave. It will make for a better travel environment. Provide a garbage bag for passengers so the car remains fairly clean. Traveling by car can be boring so also think about entertainment. Bring plenty of CD’s or make sure your MP3 player is full of songs since there are few radio stations on the open road. Encourage you travel mates to bring their music as well.
The day that you leave fill up your gas tank and check the oil level and tire pressure. Pack lots of snacks and drinks so you don’t have to make unnecessary pit stops.

Now you’re ready for your road trip!
